I. Development History of Silicone Oil in the Personal Care Field
- 1950: Low-viscosity silicone oil was used in skin care products to play a role in lubrication and care;
- 1970: Volatile silicone oil was used in antiperspirants as a volatile carrier, which left no residue on the skin and provided a light skin feel;
- 1980: High-viscosity silicone oil was used in shampoos and conditioners to deliver a silky and smooth hair texture;
- 1990: Various modified silicone oils such as amino silicone oil and polyether silicone oil were applied in shampoos, conditioners, hair treatments, and hair gels, enriching the formula options;
- 2000: Silicone resins and silicone elastomers were used in color cosmetics and skin care products, bringing the product formulas to a brand-new sensory level defined as "silky".
II. Core Information on Silicone Cross-Linked Polymers
1. Initial Form
It initially existed in the form of gel. Due to its ability to bring light, silky, easy-to-spread, dry and non-greasy skin feel to cosmetics, it has been widely recognized by formulators.
2. Structure
Silicone cross-linked polymer gel is a mixture of high-molecular-weight siloxane cross-linked polymers dispersed in volatile cyclic siloxanes, low-viscosity silicone oils, or organic oils. It is prepared by the addition cross-linking of linear polysiloxanes with Si—H groups in the side chains and vinyl-terminated polysiloxanes in a solvent.
3. Classification
- By cross-linked polymer structure: To improve compatibility with various personal care ingredients, organic functional groups such as alkyl, polyether, and amino groups are grafted onto the main chain of cross-linked polysiloxanes. It is classified into methyl vinyl silicone cross-linked polymer, methyl polyether silicone cross-linked polymer, long-chain alkyl vinyl silicone cross-linked polymer, polyether long-chain alkyl silicone cross-linked polymer, etc.;
- By appearance form: Starting from the initial gel, it has developed into various forms such as powder mixtures, emulsions, suspensions, and composite powders.
4. Characteristics and Values
- Skin feel advantages: It can endow products with a dry, silky, and light skin feel;
- Additional functions: It absorbs oil and improves aesthetic effects (e.g., soft focus, covering wrinkles and skin blemishes);
