The role of organosilicon in cosmetics

Organosilicons (such as silicone oils and siloxane compounds) are widely used in cosmetics due to their unique chemical structures (including hydrophobicity, low surface tension, and excellent film-forming properties). Their main functions can be summarized into the following categories:
- Regulating skin feel and enhancing user experience
The molecular structure of organosilicons is smooth and non-hydrophilic, which can bring a smooth, refreshing, and non-greasy touch when applied. For example:
- When added to skincare products (lotions, creams), they can reduce the heaviness of traditional oils, making the products easier to spread, and leaving no "oil film feeling" on the skin surface after absorption.
- When incorporated into cosmetics (foundation, concealer, lipstick), they can reduce the friction between the product and the skin, improve spreadability, prevent caking and dryness, and make the makeup more compliant.
- Film-forming protection, enhancing makeup retention and protection
Organosilicons can form a thin, breathable film on the surface of the skin or hair, playing multiple roles:
- Makeup retention and color locking: The organosilicon film in cosmetics (such as foundation, eyeshadow) can reduce the dissolution of makeup by sweat and oil, prolonging the makeup retention time.
- Isolation and protection: In 隔离霜 (isolation cream) and sunscreen, the film can physically isolate external pollutants and ultraviolet rays (assisting in sun protection), while reducing the direct irritation of cosmetic ingredients to the skin, making it suitable for sensitive skin.
- Hair protection: In hair care products (hair masks, essential oils), the film structure can fill in the damage of hair cuticles, reduce friction-induced breakage during combing, and make the hair smoother.

Assisting in moisturizing and reducing water loss
Although organosilicons themselves do not have water absorption properties, the film they form can reduce the evaporation of skin moisture and enhance the water-locking effect of moisturizing products (especially suitable for dry skin). -
Improving product stability
Organosilicons have strong chemical inertness and can be compatible with ingredients such as oils and water, helping to stabilize formulations like emulsions and creams, preventing ingredient stratification or deterioration, and extending the product's shelf life.
